The square tube is a section closed on all four walls, square or rectangular. Being closed brings two things: the profile behaves much the same whichever direction the load comes from, and it is many times stiffer in torsion than an open section. That makes it the right choice for free-standing posts, frame corners, cantilevers fixed at one point and members taking wind load.
Handrail newels and intermediate posts, stair and platform legs, racking and storage systems, machine guard cages, panel and door frames and field equipment stands are the most common applications. Being hollow brings an extra advantage: cable or hose can be run through the section, and with end caps fitted you get a sealed body. In wet, salty or chemically laden air, a closed section also limits dirt and moisture building up on inner surfaces.
